Habitat and Lowes partner for Women Build Week

February 27, 2020 – Petoskey, MI – Northwest Michigan Habitat for Humanity has partnered with Lowe’s in Petoskey to host a Women Build Event at two of their ongoing construction sites. During the event Habitat will host volunteers from Lowe’s at construction sites around the area to engage the employees in their work to build safe and affordable homes in Northern Michigan. The Lowe’s employees will be volunteering their time at construction projects taking place in Pellston and Oden. “We are always excited to see volunteers from our local businesses come out to the construction site” says Gina Stegehuis, Community Relations Coordinator for Habitat. “It not only helps us to get these houses built, it provides an opportunity for our residents to get involved with our organization and learn about our programs. It’s a great team building exercise and is an opportunity to pick up some construction skills that may help them on their own home projects.”

Lowe’s volunteers will be on site in Pellston on Tuesday, March 3rd and Oden on Friday, March 6th. The Pellston volunteers will be working on a home that is being built in partnership with the Pellston High School Trades Students. The volunteers will be laying flooring and other indoor projects. The Friday group is scheduled to work on insulation on a home in Oden. Habitat has been working on rehabbing the large, donated home to be sold to a future Program Partner through their Homeownership Programs. “We always have great success with our Women Build events” says Stegehuis. “The most frequently asked question we get is if men can volunteer during a Women Build event, and the answer is yes! This event is really an opportunity to shine a spotlight on our wonderful women volunteers in the community. We are happy to host any volunteers who are interested in taking part. We love to engage with these groups and get to know the volunteers, and we are always impressed by the enthusiasm and the amount of work that they are able to get done.”

The 2019 Women Build event took place in August and featured volunteers from Stafford’s Hospitality and Encore Financial in Petoskey who worked on the Oden home-rehab. NWM Habitat has several new builds scheduled to begin in Spring and plans to host another Women Build event in the fall to engage local businesses.
